Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and young adults in the United States.

Cystic fibrosis causes the body to produce an abnormally thick mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. This mucus also obstructs the pancreas and interferes with digestion.

An individual must inherit a defective copy of the CF gene – one from each parent – to have CF.

One in 31 Americans is an unknowing, symptom-less carrier.

The median life expectancy for a CF patient is 36.8 years.

All information has been provided by the Georgia Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
